Definition of Computer Aided Design (CAD) Software

CAD is computer aided design. CAD is used for designing objects such as architectural designs, mechanical designs, and electrical designs. When you use this type of software tool you’ll be able to get results that are perfect each time and that look very professional. Most software packages will come with a multitude of graphics that are already built into the system. All you need to do is choose what you want and add them to the design that you’re working with. You don’t need to be an artist to use a CAD tool. The features that are built into this type of software will do all the aligning for you. You’ll be able to have all the design power that you need when you use CAD software.

Most CAD software programs will also come with many templates that you can use, as well as the symbols that you need to create designs that are readable and 100% useable. Besides using the CAD tool to create designs for your architectural or mechanical business you can use it to create floor plans to design your new home, landscaping designs for your garden, circuit diagrams for your electrical needs, and block diagrams.

There are many CAD software packages that you can choose from. The best thing is to know exactly what you want from the software so that you’re not disappointed with your purchase. CAD software doesn’t come without a high price and most times will be un-returnable once you’ve opened it and installed it on your computer. If you’re unsure about what CAD software package to buy you may be able to try a free download that many software manufacturers will offer to try and get your attention. This will allow you, for a short period of time, to work with the CAD software to be sure it’s what you want and does what you want it to do.

James Hunt has spent 15 years as a professional writer and researcher covering stories that cover a whole spectrum of interest. Read more at http://www.cad-software-center.com

FMEA And The CAD Design Process

FMEA Analysis? What is that?

FMEA stands for Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. Not that FMEA analysis has much to do with CNC, but you might come across it in your CAD studies. I will cover FMEA very briefly here. FMEA has really risen to power and prominence over the last few years because of software advancements and computing power increases. To sum up FMEA quickly, you are trying to find where and why some thing would fail or break before it actually does.

FMEA is a risk assessment technique for identifying possible failures in a system, part, assembly, process, etc. The Failure Mode part of FMEA are the ways, or modes, in which something might fail. Failures are any errors or defects that can be potential or actual. The Effects analysis of FMEA refers to studying the consequences of those failures.

CAD Software Price Points

I consider there to be a few different price points in the CAD Software Market. These can be categorized as hobby or professional price points. This is usually a good break as well in the features a program offers. Here is a quick run down.

Hobby CAD Software
Could possibly be free
$0-$500 price point
Could be 2D, 2.5D or 3D capable, usually 2D or 2.5D
Stand alone licenses
Meant for ease of user interface
Probably missing some advanced tools

Professional CAD Software
$500-$10,000 price point
2D, 2.5D and 3D capable
Network version that let multiple designers interact
Different modules or plug-ins like FMEA
Full featured, most every type of tool is available

Examples of Commercial CAD Software Programs
AutoCAD
Turbo CAD
IntelliCAD
Pro/Engineer
CAD Pro
Alibris
Solidworks
QuickCAD
Rhino3D

Before you buy you should really check out all the options. There are many types of software and each one is a bit different. You need to look over the advantages and disadvantages and then make the tough call.

Plastic Injection Molding Jobs - Injection Mold Design

In the fast paced world of plastic molding, injection mold design is one of the most interesting and challenging jobs to be found. You will draw upon all of your creative abilities as you develop the design for new products.

It might look easy because of the powerful CAD programs, but in reality, they are just tools to help you. In the field of injection mold design you often must develop new and original methods of plastic molding. This sometimes requires a lot of creativity and inventiveness. What is a typical day like for injection mold design? Most injection mold designers follow a schedule similar to the mold makers. Because their mold designs are soon going to be manufactured by the mold makers, there is a very close relationship between these two.

A mold designer spends most of his time at his computer, using powerful CAD programs such as Unigraphics, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, MasterCam and many, many others. Nowadays, the programs are incredibly fast and powerful.

Very often the mold designer will be required to communicate with the various mold makers, CNC programmers, WEDM operators, etc.. This rapport is critical for a successful career as an injection mold designer.

Usually the designer does not work quite as many hours per week as the mold maker. Often mold designers have a shop background and help out in the mold making shop as well. This is especially common if there is a slowdown in design and a lot of work in the shop. How do you become an injection mold designer? Essentially, there are two paths in the USA. One is to learn on the job and the other is to learn at a design school. Both are common and work well.

Many plastic molding designers come from a mold making background. This is especially helpful to provide a realistic approach to mold design. There is no substitute for practical experience!

Several tech schools and universities offer excellent courses on plastic injection mold design. A background in mechanics, spatial relationships, ability to visualize 3D parts, and mathematics are all essential.

Is there a future in injection mold design?

Like everything else associated with the plastics industry, the answer is yes and no. Yes, because the plastics field is growing all the time and skilled designers are in high demand and low supply.

No, because the field is so competitive on a global scale. In this electronic age the designer does not even need to be in the same country as the mold maker. I had this experience at one shop; the designer was in Canada and we were in the USA. It worked well, but required considerable phone time on the part of the project manager. Conclusion Working in injection mold design is challenging, interesting, secure, well paying and in demand. Anyone interested will find many good courses available and companies seeking qualified designers.

Randy Hough has worked as a plastic injection mold maker since 1978. He heads a group of industry professionals who have a web site dedicated to injection mold making. You can learn the latest trends and techniques by visiting http://www.global-plastic-injection-molding.com
